A basket of cherries

Cherry (Prunus spp.) or ‘kersen’ (in Nederlands) is a drupe fruit, yellow to red in colour when fruit is ripe, sour to sweet taste. During June –July, they sold in market after blooming in May.

I am as Indonesian know cherry, but when I am in Holland, people called cherry as ‘kersen’, which is in bahasa Indonesia we refer ‘kersen’ as different fruit. I was confusing when I found ‘kersen’ name in front of a box with full of cherry. Kersen or cherry is a common name of Prunus spp, but not kersen in bahasa Indonesia, which refer to Muntingia calabura.

I was eager to know how the tree looks like. Cherry is a medium tree; habitus straight and cylindrical bole. Leathery leaves; beautiful white flower. I just notice that a tree in front of our house is a cherry, but I only saw one tiny cherry few weeks ago. Perhaps, birds like them all and left only a few of them.

Today, I bought a basket kersen or cherry in the open market of Wageningen. I paid 3.5 euro for 2 kg! It’s very cheap compare to normal price in Utrecht, which is 3.5 euro for only 0.5 kg. The vendor kindly gave us 5 mandarijn (sweet orange) for free. He wanted to finish all fruits he is selling today. Hmm.. it is very nice. We went back home happily with a basket of cherries in hand :-)
